🎬 Basic Info

🧩 Plot Summary

The film centers on a brilliant scientist/engineer (Josh Duhamel) who invents a miniaturized clean-energy source intended to benefit humanity. However, his corporate backers (led by Peter Stormare) plan to weaponize the technology instead of using it for good. Realizing this, he flees and goes “off the grid” — living in isolation — but the corporation sends in mercenaries (led by Greg Kinnear’s character) to track him down. 👍 What Works & 👎 What Doesn’t

What works:

  • The cast has strong names (Duhamel, Kinnear, Stormare) which brings some credibility.

  • The premise of a scientist grappling with weaponization of his invention taps into a familiar but appealing theme (science vs. corporate exploitation).

  • Some reviewers note that when it focuses on the “cat-and-mouse” survival sequences in the woods, it shows potential.

What doesn’t:

  • Critics broadly consider it formulaic and generic. For example, one of the more negative reviews:

“Director Johnny Martin’s hackneyed action-thriller is woefully short on action and thrills, and generic enough to suggest it was scripted by AI.”

  • The Rotten Tomatoes score is very low (9% based on 11 critic reviews) showing that the critical reception is overwhelmingly negative.

  • Some plot details are vague or under-developed (what exactly the invention does is glossed over) and some characters are described as one‐dimensional.

  • Violence, explosions, gunfights, etc.—so it’s standard action fare rather than deeply innovative.

🎯 Verdict

If you’re into action thrillers and don’t mind something that hits familiar beats, Off the Grid may be an okay rental for a relaxed evening. However, if you’re looking for something with deep originality, character development, or a stellar critical reception, this one probably won’t hit the mark.
